No ... one needs to be admitted in a status which permits study. Not
everyone requires a student visa. A visa is required to present one's
self at the border and seek entry after that the visa is no longer
relevent. At the moment Canadian PRs from commonwealth countries do not
require a passport visa, although this is likely to change soon.
At the moment you need to get an I-20 from the school you want to
attend, and then present the I-20 at the border along with proof of
funds and other needed documents and the INS officer will admit you if
you meet the requirements. Canadian Citizens or Canadian PRs from
commonwealth countries don't need a passport visa issued by a US embassy
or consulate.

Hello stuart brook,
Thanks for your reply. Will the officials at the port of entry stamp the passport with the F1 stamp or they will simply stamp a date stamp(i mean immigration seal) on the passport.
Will the college/university admit if there is no stamp in the passport.
If there is any website or some thing like that please let me know. Thanks for your reply.Wish you happy new year
with regards
vikram

You will be admitted F1 with an F1 ADMISSION stamp ... not a visa stamp
... and an I-94 with an F1 ADMISSION stamp.
What the Univ. needs is the I-94 with the F1 admission stamp. The visa
doesn't have any value once you are in the US. People can have say an
F1 visa, an H1B visa and a B2 visa in their passport for the US all at
the same time, all valid ... what matters is the status that you seek on
entry as evidenced by the I-94. If the I-94 said you were admitted B2,
then you couldn't go to the Univ.
