Question Brits that have returned from USA????

I was wondering if you suffered financially by returning to UK from US? (particularly with the house prices being so high).

Yes. My employer paid me 3,000 quid relocation expenses - Great.

However, here are my "real" and "unreal" expenses (I think you'll figure out what I mean):

Cost of selling house, including realter's fees (6% in States, baby) taking a loss because I needed to sell it quickly, and it was mid-winter: about 10,000 dollars (7,000 pounds)

Flight for me 800 dollars (500 pounds)

Loss I took on selling my car (sold well below book price, for same reasons): 4,000 dollars (2,500 pounds)

Cost (above selling price of "old" car) of buying "new" car: 4,000 dollars (not including the 4k I just mentioned).

Shipping and 6 months quarantine for my dog: 3,000 pounds

Here comes the rub: Losses on so-called "safe" investments I put my house proceeds into while looking for a house: 6,000 pounds.

That's about 23,000 pounds in all, minus the 3,000 relocation expenses they gave me (thanks!) left me 20,000 quid out of pocket.

I moved back to the States 12 months later (don't ask) - about another 8,000 pound net loss this time.

But then I'm not in this for the money (obviously - duh!). If youy're looking at this and thinking "He must have a lot of money", think again. Both times, my experiences took me back to rock bottom - start over again with zero. I am just now (3 yrs later) starting to build up savings, investments, retirement, etc. - and I'm 46.
