Default British family seeking to live in US - advice please!

Hi folks

We are a young British family seeking to relocate to the US. I have no idea what the process would involve or where we would start(!) but we're fed up with blighty.

For the moment we would not be employed in the US (I work internationally) but would obviously require schooling for our 2 young children.

Can anyone out there give us some advice on where to start, potential hurdles and pitfalls?! What would the situation be regarding tax payments?

Any help /advice would be much appreciated.

Regards
MGS

Start with determining whether or not you're eligible for a visa. Without a visa, nothing else is going to happen - ever! Tonrob gave you a great link.

Comment: US Citizens do not need visas. Winston Churchill was a US citizen all his life -- but the case law establishing that did not come out until after he died. In fact, his address to the US Congress in 1942 mentioned that had his father been an American rather than his mother, he would be sitting in the US Congress.

Triple checked my lineage - no Churchills I'm afraid

I work in the Oil & Gas industry and would be using the US as a base to travel from, working internationally (outwith the UK).

I suspect this will be irrelevant as we don't seem to be ticking any of the boxes, unless of course I chose to work in the US.

Could you transfer to the US division of your oil/gas company, but still work offshore/overseas?
