You could look at getting a job in the UK with an American software firm. Build up a few years experience and see if there's any job openings over in the US. Some firms might also offer secondments over to the US- I think anything from six months to two years is not uncommon. Remember also that California is not the only place to look at for software jobs.

My OH is a senior software engineer, he worked in the UK for an American co for 10+ years after graduating, and we came over a few months ago.

From my experience, an international software firm or consultancy is unlikely to transfer a software engineer from the UK to the US. US developers are just as good but cheaper and they don't need visas or 5 weeks' paid vacation a year. Developers who get L1 visas usually are either very highly skilled or have worked their way to a management position.
