So you were coming to the US to as a student to receive practical training:

J1 Student Visa. ... J-1 exchange visitors come to the United States to teach, study, receive training, or demonstrate special skills. The J1 visa is meant for students who need practical training that is not available to them in their home country, and the training must be directly related to their academic program
Yes, I never said about an F1...

I was given a J-1 visa to study history abroad not for practical training.

It depends. It may not alleviate the need to go to secondary, but may make it easier to resolve in secondary next time. It's impossible to tell.

UPDATE: Just heard back from the university in the U.S. They said that the State Department contacted them shortly after they terminated my visa and forced them to change my status to "NO SHOW" as I had already entered the U.S. Apparently this has put a flag on my record. They are offering to write me a letter to corroborate my story which is helpful. Should I hold off on booking any trips to the U.S. in the future do you think?

Hold off for what?

It is what it is.

Make whatever plans you like to visit the U.S. but do so knowing that you *may* be send to secondary inspection for additional questioning and that it is *possible* (but unlikely) that you could be denied admission to the U.S..

There really isn't anything else that you can do.

You were a "no show."

It would be highly unusual for someone to go through the trouble of getting a visa and then only coming for one day and leaving.

More unusual, though, is that the family emergency required you to cancel your plans to study in the US, instead of just delaying them for a few weeks.

I am not doubting your story but it is unusual and not surprising at all that you were referred to secondary for additional questioning. As would happen to a non-UKC entering the UK under these circumstances.

If you have not done anything wrong - you will not be denied entry to the US.

Being a "no show" and then properly canceling the visa is not grounds to deny in the future.
