Default B1 Visa for retired people

My father is a retired British Citizen, who has come over a number of times to visit us. He is in his mid 60's. Every time he has visited the US it has been on the VWP.

He has been speaking about a longer trip, to spend some time with our children before he get's to 70 and the kids get to that annoying teenage phase and don't want to spend time with him.

I read on here a lot about people applying for B2's when eligible for an ESTA and then not being able to visit on the VWP. I also read it is more likely to be approved when a person is retired.

Does anyone have any experience of this? Any success or horror stories. I would love him to come and stay with us for 5 months or so, but I won't have him risk not being able to come visit for the 2 months he does.

Do you mean a B2.

Certainly seen cases of retired people getting one.

All you can do is try. As one gets closer to (and over) retirement age, chances of a successful B2 increase. Of course, as usual, no guarantees.

Friends of mine (66 and 67), retired couple, have done just this. No problem, visa was obtained without any issues.

They wanted one to visit their daughter and new grandchildren.

What will dad do for healthcare? Private funds or travel insurance, if available, or will you be responsible for his bills if he needs medical care.

Be aware of the Substantial Presence Test if they are visiting for a longer term:
