Default Applying for H1-B visas for UK citizen

What's the best way to go about applying for jobs in the US?

- is it worth going to the US on a holiday visa, applying for jobs and then
changing to an H1-B once I have one

- or should I apply for positions from the UK and not immediately highlight
to potential employers that I will need an H1-B

- or apply for jobs from the UK and make it clear from the onset that I will
need an H1-B visa?

Going to the US as a tourist and applying for a job is generally a good
idea from a "selling yourself" standpoint, but be prepared to be
questions about your intent when you enter the USA. If they sense that
you plan to change to H-1B, you would be denied admission because having
that intent when entering the USA would be illegal.

There are other pitfalls:

- - UK (or Australian) citizens are usually eligible for the visa waiver
program. With the VWP, it is not possible to change to any other status.
So you would have to apply for an actual tourist visa at the London
consulate. And the consulate is very reluctant to issue tourist visas to
VWP citizens - you'd have a very good reason, and very strong evidence
that you plan to *return* after your visit is complete.

- - The H-1B quota has been filled for the year, so you would not be able
to get it until October 1.

You may want to do that. It all depends on how well you sell yourself,
and how much you are in demand.

I will

That's really just a strategy question that has very little to do with
immigration law.
