A friend of mine was in a similar position to you. He tried to come back into the US on the Visa Waiver, but was sent to Secondary Inspection. There he was asked if he'd ever visited the US before, and the story came out. He had been hoping to sort things out once back here.
From what I've read here the 12 month-rule is only a rule-of-thumb. The INS want to see a continuing connection. Filing US tax returns for the period you were away would be a start. It needn't cost you anything because you could claim what you paid to Ireland against what you owe to the US.
