Default Advice please!

Hi everyone. I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice regarding my current situation.

Basically, for entirely personal reasons (need I say more??), I want to move to the States. I'm a Brit, currently studying a Master's degree in Translation in the UK which I finish next summer. As far as I can see, I have three possible options:

1) Some kind of internship on a J-1? However I'm completely clueless about how to go about looking for one. I'm also not sure that I could get anything related to my specialism, or even anything I'm remotely qualified for.

2) Going on a VWP for 3 months, meanwhile supporting myself by continuing to do translation work for UK clients. I'd appreciate if someone could clarify whether this is legal; either way it's far from an ideal solution.

3) Moving to Tijuana. (Yes, I am desperate)

I'd greatly appreciate any knowledge anyone could share, especially about what I could do on a J-1. Are any of these options actually realistic? Are there any other posibilities for someone in my situation?

Thanks in advance!

Maybe you need to say more. Is one of your personal reasons a love interest in the USA?

You cannot do ANY work in the USA, even though your clients are UK and payment is made in UK.

I'm sure you're kidding, but just to make sure, moving to Tijuana does not help you get to the USA unless you have illegal intentions...which of course is not good.

J-1 might be realistic, you'll have to do more research on the J-1 visa.

Why not just marry her and get on with life?

Do you think Mexico is going to let you immigrate? They have their eligibility criteria just as the US does.

Indeed it is. We were studying together in Spain, until she returned to the States in August. We plan to keep the long distance thing going for the remainder of this academic year, but are looking for a way of being geographically closer asap!

Darn. Oh well, thanks for clarifying!

I'm not kidding. I have previously worked legally in Mexico as a TEFL teacher, and being in Tijuana would mean we could visit each other relatively frequently. Plus as understand it, the "North America" rule on the VWP does not apply if you are a legal resident of Mexico. This, however, is a last resort. I can think of plenty of places I'd rather live than Tijuana.

Obviously marriage would make things a lot easier, but this isn't something either of us are prepared to consider at this stage of our relationship.

If anyone has any pointers on where to look for J-1 related info, how to go about applying etc. I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks a lot

You might look at the BUNAC programmes, though I don't know much about them. http://www.bunac.org/uk/workamerica/
