Default Advice on J1 intern wanting to remain in NYC?

Hi guys,

I appreciate your help.

For the past year I have been in the USA (NYC) on an internship programme, on a J-1 visa. The internship programme saw me placed at a large financial institution whilst studying some post-grad academic modules.

My internship finishes Jan 18th, with my visa allowing a further month to travel.

I am really really keen to remain in NYC. I do have a job offer from another financial institution (position commencing Feb 1), but short of the internship programme extending my DS2019, which they're not prepared to do, there does not seem to be a way to do it.

What really is the best way to stay in NYC? I don't fully understand the H-1B visas; how can companies employ/sponsor people in April for an October start?

Help!

Does your J-1 have the 2 year home residency requirement?

Really? The best way? Marry a USC from NYC.

They submit the paperwork in April... it takes a while before they know whether or not any visas have been approved.

No 2 yr residency...

...maybe a little early to propose!

...basically, i'm a young Masters finance professional with three years' experience in the industry. Do I have a chance?

Can you not transfer the DS2019 over to the new employer and then extend it?

In '02 I had my company get me an H-1B upon my J-1 expiring. But back then I don't believe they had caps (I certainly wasn't aware of any) so it was relatively easy.

Good luck
