Default 20-day security check question.

Hi all, I'm an Indonesian and will be going home this summer to get H1B stamp. I
have heard that the 20-day security check is only for moslems...is that true? Or is
it for everyone? And is it 20-day maximum which means it can take less than that?
Thanks in advance.

It is NOT tied to the religion, but rather supposed to be tied to nationality and
age. I am saying supposed to be because the actual criteria are secret.

You being from Indonesia, unfortunately I would expect that you will be subject to
the security check. There is a way for you to find out, although it will cost you
about $30 or so and is otherwise fairly pointless: try making an appointment for a
visa at a US consulate in Canada or Mexico. If you will be subject to the security
check, they will tell you within a week.

The 20 days is probably not exact, but I would not expect it to be much less
than that.

Ingo, are you saying that the U.S. Canadian consulate will cancel my appoinment if I
try to make one? Please elaborate, because this might be worth it. Thank you.

Yes. If you are subject to the security review, they will contact you within a week
and tell you that they cannot give you an appointment. If you are not subject, they
will not contact you at all after you make the appointment.

It's kind of a circuitous route to get this information, and in a way abusing the
appointment system, but should be perfectly legal.

Made an appoinment on Monday (04/08) with Toronto consulate. I just received a
phonecall today (04/11) that due to special processing, they have cancelled my
appoinment and told me not to make any appoinments at either Canada or Mexico. Oh
well. I guess I have to go home for this one.

Should I expect any problems other than having to wait for 1 month? I have never been
out of status and was a student before I switched to
H1B. Thanks a lot.

have heard that the 20-day security check is only for moslems...is that true? Or is
it for everyone? And is it 20-day maximum which means it can take less than that?
Thanks in advance.
