So its 10 weeks since we landed in cairns, got to say we made the right move, its definatly a better standard of life here. Havent had any hostility being here from anyone. Found the aussies to be very friendly. Made a few friends already.Moved into our place at trinity beach overlooking the sea. Rent is 330 dollars a week. Had bad credit history in uk but got a new car from fords no problem. Food is more expensive here. But some things are cheaper. Only downside we have had is its not easy to get a job in cairns for my wife applied for loads of jobs. But alot of people going for them. They tend to like the younger generation as they can pay less wages to them. Anyway if anyone needs some info about cairns give me a shout thanks

Took me 3 months to find a job when we moved here on my husbands 457 visa - and that was in sydney.

Cairns is rife when it comes to "It's not what you know, it's who you know".
If there's a particular job type your missus does try to identify if there is some sort of social gathering around that where she can go and rub noses.

My ex and I spent a year in Cairns and just couldn't get any work at all - the backpackers were working in all the waitress, bar jobs for accommodation not cash even. We ended up going to Mackay (as we were stuck in FNQ on our visas). Do you have to stay in Cairns or can you try Mackay? I got a job there in a day. Not a nice place at all but there's work.
