Hi, we are not expats yet - but working on it. We do however have a fifth wheel which is currently in BC.
Our question is: We are looking to upgrade to a larger fifth wheel but are unclear on the uk driver licience equivalent in BC. My husband has a LGV (hgv) class 1 uk licience. Is that the same as a BC class 1??
If so will this enable him to tow a house trailer? (Fifth wheel over 4,600 kg)

I have moved your thread over to our Trucking Forum. Hopefully someone will be along soon to help you. Good luck.

Hi, a Class1 in UK is the equivalent of a Class1 here but he'll have to retake his Class1 test and airbrake course in BC, won't be able to drive here on a UK HGV licence.
AFAIK, you only need a car licence to drive a 5th wheeler unless it has air brakes, then he needs to take the airbrake course/test.

Your Class1 UK licence counts for nothing here, your car licence does.
Up to 4600kg gross, you could drive on your UK car licence.
Above 4600kg gross, you are stuffed, you need to either to get a House Trailer endorsement (driving course & test) added to your BC car driving licence (Class5), which you don't have or if you hold (which you don't) a Class1/2/3 BC licence.
So, You cannot drive that vehicle until you pass the appropriate tests and get the appropriate licence, sorry.

1. There is a time limit on how long your UK car driving licence is valid here and i don't think its four months !
2. If you take the equivalent class 1 your husband will have to surrender his UK licence, Your not allowed two licences here except for a short period, i think its either 60 or 90 days.
Possible way around it is take his class 1 (photocopy UK class 1 first) get a BC one and then get his UK one re issued when you return to the UK then you have two but i suggest he leaves his UK in the UK when you come here.
