A major winter storm could complicate the first post-New Years' Day back to work and school for millions in New England and beyond.

The storm, predicted to affect the USA from the Upper Midwest to the East Coast from Wednesday through Friday, is expected to bring the heaviest snow across southern New England on Thursday and early Friday.

"Over a foot of snow will fall in localized areas of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut and the cities of Hartford, Conn., Providence, R.I., and Boston," predicted AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Sosnowski. Lesser amounts, in the 6- to 12-inch range, are likely in northeastern Pennsylvania, in New Jersey and in southeastern New York state.

This includes all of New York City, where the National Weather Service in New York is warning that the storm's strong winds will cause blowing and drifting snow later on Thursday. In anticipation of the storm, the weather service placed the entire New York City area under a winter storm watch for Thursday and Friday. A winter storm watch means there is potential for significant snow accumulations that may affect travel.

The weather service on Wednesday warned that several inches are possible through early Friday along the Interstate 90 corridor from Chicago to Boston.

I live between the upper Midwest and the east coast and this is the first I've heard of Hercules. Yes, the weather is bloody awful here in the New York State north country, high of -5 predicted today and tomorrow, but I've heard nothing about a storm.

Mind you, I don't have a TV, I've stopped listening to the radio, and I don't really look at newspapers on a regular basis ..

Since when did storms get names anyway?

We are hopefully flying into JFK early evening, fingers crossed the storm isn't as bad as the initial forecast. 4 flights from Heathrow have already been cancelled today two to Boston and 2 to NY. Just hope there is someone at the long stay parking lot to dig out our car!

Hurricanes for decades, but I think it was only a couple of years ago that the Weather Channel worked out that winter weather would be a lot more marketable if the winter storms had names too.

The problem is that winter storms morph, change and merger with other systems unlike hurricanes that have a known start point and are trackable as defined systems for thousands of miles, which is why winter storms had not been named before the Weather Channel started doing so.

I just read in the Daily Mail that it was colder in Winnipeg last night than it was on Mars! I must admit one reason I read the DM is the readers' comments ... Someone from Edmonton, I think it was, said the women on Mars were probably nicer too ...

The weather channel started naming storms just to hype them up and get more viewers and traffic to its web site.
The national weather service refuses to recognize these names and hence all the hype.
This is just another winter nor'easter.

the mere existence of WWE is bad enough; its cliche and trite too.

Atleast 12 labours wont' be spread over numerous sequels. It won't be of surprise if it makes the top 10 list for the worst films of 2014.

I wanted to go skiing tomorrow but blizzard conditions plus the temps being 0F and below, and it being windy have put me off.

That's saying something. I don't usually mind the cold.
