Ditto Mrs P with her Southern accent re "pin" and "pen" .... they are completely indistinguishable when she says them.

On the flip side my pronunciations of "ant" and "aunt" are identical, as as are "pawn" and "porn", whereas Mrs P insists each pair have different pronunciations for the two words.

No worries cobber.

(I do hope that using extinct language isn't cultural appropriation, I'd die of shame) (there's no dead person smiley, so I used a wake one) I'm babbling now.

I don't think they misunderstand me, it's more a case of them thinking for a second "What's a tomahto?" and sometimes I've repeated it the same way and they've gone "Oh, okay Tomayto!" I don't particularly have a strong accent either. It's really mild! It takes people a few words of conversation before they go "Oh...where are you from?"

I always give people troubles when ordering "ham" for a sub/sandwich. Although now it's become a running joke with the folks that work there.

Are you from the place where saying the word ''third' in public places gets you funny looks, or is that the Southern bunch?

That does my nut in too, pawn and porn should sound they same. I've taken to using reinforcement methods and saying pooon every time we pass a pawn shop so that should I ever take leave of my senses and ask to visit such a store she won't get all excited and think I'm about to drag her off to her first adult establishment!
