You get mildly offended when people call Southerners 'uneducated' - even though 5 years ago you would have (and did) said the same thing.

I just got back from Tuscaloosa, AL which was a surprisingly cool little city with a terrific quality of life (at least as an outside observer). I've also been very favorably impressed by places like Charleston, SC, Savannah, GA and Chattanooga, TN. All characterful, interesting and comfortable places to live. Also, I'd say the average Southerner is more polite, more welcoming and more funny than the average American. I've found that most stereotypes about any place are usually tempered by actually visiting the place in question.

If you don't know that the NFL Conference Championship games are on an hour from now, you haven't been in the US long enough! (I don't even live there, and I know they're on...)

Another thing is thinking how much I'll miss when/if I move back to the UK. I will miss free drink refills!

... you eat a meal just using a fork, including cutting up the food with the side of your fork.

And when you do need to resort to the use of a knife, you hold it like a pen, .... which is grossly ineffective and makes you look as clumsy as f***.

Thankfully I haven't gotten to that bit and hopefully never will. I always use a knife and I really don't understand the practice just using the fork to eat a meal that requires cutting. It's still funny going out to eat with people. I watch with bemusement as they chase the food around the plate and then have to use their fingers to push the food on to the fork.

"cutlery" or "silverware"?I've given up. Cutlery at home, silverware outside.
