We're looking at this the wrong way peeps! Maybe I'll learn Italian instead.

I think you can take Singapore out of the equation. Extremely expensive and no route to retire there.

Has anyone mentioned the 'F' word yet?

That's misleading. Sardinia seems to have the highest number of people over 100 but Japan consistently tops tables of average life expectancy.

When I retired we left the UK and moved to Oregon.

I have done somethings I would never of thought of doing when I retired. Help start what has become a successful non-profit and elected to city council. Not done other things mainly buy an RV and travel. I want to go to Monument Valley and see where John Ford filmed the westerns I grew up watching in the UK. Mrs L doesn't want an RV and watching the grandson play baseball and soccer or spring ball is more important, so we haven't traveled. Mrs L has got involved with organizing the city CERT volunteers and emergency preparedness and suddenly almost 10 years have gone and not much travelling.

I wouldn't mind getting an apartment in Sarasota or thereabouts. Wouldn't mind spending a few months there each year. My wife has a blanket veto on FL though.

We're not planning on going anywhere, but we're not close to retirement either.

My parents were hell-bent on moving when they retired, but my mother planned to go and live near my sister, and my father planned to return to Yorkshire, "because it was cheaper". Inertia, and some input from me, persuaded my mother to stay put, as she had almost all her friends within ten miles, whereas if they had moved to Norwich, where my sister lived, it would have left them without local friends, and in any case shortly before they retired my sister moved to London, and then to France, Pennsylvania, and then back to the UK, currently Cheshire.

Me neither, certainly not anywhere I'd want to retire to!

My mother moved to England in 1947 when she married and she hated it for the rest of her life. First she wanted to move to Switzerland, then Wales. Finally, when my father died in 2000, she set her heart on moving back to Libya (salad days, where she'd met my father etc.) She had dementia by this point and simply couldn't accept that Libya may have changed a bit since 1946. My sister & I did plot to buy her a one way ticket and put her on the plane...

We think about and we still have 20 years to go. I worry that we won't be able to afford to retire here - the thought of medical bills even with medicare makes me feel sick! Who know what our pensions will be worth v cost of living, I can bet the UK will shift the goal posts so that we get nothing (even though we are still making our voluntary contributions) and we have kiddo to help get through college beginning 2017. Immediate plan is get The Dude off to college and downsize, mortgage free and, as hubby keeps hinting, get me back to work.

Medical expenses with Medicare should be somewhat manageable. Retirement advisors seem to want folks to budget $6,000 per person for out of pocket medical expenses (OK that was four or five years ago, when we first talked to them) and that seems about right, whether you go for low premium/ high deductible options or higher premium options. So it shouldn't be a bottomless abyss of potential bills.
