It would be funny if some lackeys went running around ahead of his appearances, dishing out 'protocol' forms! "Thou shalt not ...". What protocol was broken in the subject quote - don't address him (at all); don't address him by name, only by 'your majesty'?

Yo! Your Majestic Royalness! Git your ass over here!

From what I know, he and his sons are extremely nice and accommodating and really don't mind (or maybe show they mind) when people don't follow protocol as long as it's not done for negative reasons.

So we should take it as a gracious thing that they don't mind if we don't salute or bow or curtsy or whatever it is that we are 'supposed' to do? I honestly have no idea what the protocol is, and I have absolutely no intention of wasting memory cells trying to remember. If I were invited to the 'Palace' (fat chance!) I would respect the fact I was going 'inside their space' and learn the rules, but if I meet the dude in the street it would be 'yo, Chuck' from me too!

It's odd that the Agence France-Presse writer, Karin Zeitvogel, seems to think that there was "a lack of knowledge of proper etiquette" in the people at the community garden addressing Prince Charles. I'm sure that Prince Charles went there to talk to the people, and I'm sure he was pleased that they had something to say to him rather than being tongue-tied.

I suspect that the "protocol" for dealing with the royals is obscure and confusing as its US equivalent - baseball etiquette ...

Not following baseball etiquette. That's just not cricket.

I was actually thinking about this yesterday, after hearing the ABC News announcer refer to "His Royal Highness". I'm not as a militantly republican about the royal family as I used to be - in fact I am quite ambivalent about them these days - but if I met one, I would not bow.

Just listen to the absurdity of the words: His Royal Highness. Highness?
So anachronistic and ridiculous when you think about it.

I wouldn't be disrespectful, but I'm not bowing and scraping to anybody. Unless I pay for the privilege.

Charles needs to sort his own etiquette out, wiping your nose than offering to shake someones hand right after is hardly polite, even us 'commoners' know better!
