We used to go here (Fishponds) every Saturday morning. A group of us would walk there... maybe 8 years old-ish (no adults). The ABC club used to show cartoons, Lone Ranger, Rocket Man etc. Also used to announce Birthdays up on the stage in front of the screen.

I know it was my first because I lived in Keynsham (Tesco) where we had The Charlton cinema but Snow White was on at The Ritz in Brislington (Sainsbury's).

At the risk of taking this thread off at a tangent, it has featured several places I have never been to but are forever etched in my brain because of the supermarkets that I used to load delivery lorries for with biscuits and crisps at United Biscuits' Gloucester distribution warehouse.

He parachuted safely but he's in hospital.

I'll bet he's glad he didn't do it dangerously.

Where does that come from?
The original Charlton cinema became Bingo only, got demolished and became a block of flats. There are other "Charltons" that might have become a tesco.

I remember the Ritz closing, sad days too, and it became a Kwiksave and is now "Proper Job"

There's a cinema in Henleaze, Bristol that now houses a Waitrose but never a Waitrose in Brislington. Not posh enough
Briz not posh enough for Waitrose I mean

I didn't say that the cinema became a supermarket, just that the place names are familiar to me.

And you're right, it's a Sainsbury's in Brislington.

See my previous post above, my post had nothing to do with the cinemas or the specific street location of them.

So you're remembering places according to supermarkets. It's an interesting idea. Have you been to Iceland?

Funnily enough I remember Croyde, Devon for an Ice Creamm shop, South Molton for a Fish and Chip shop and all I can remember of Moncton when I passed through in 1975 was a supermarket which I think is now a Salvation Army store.

I think the Cinema I posted is now a Wetherspoons.

Found a picture of the screen/stage as I remember it.

The Embassy Cinema that I first went to in Braintree, Essex is now a Weatherspoons.

The only other one in town back in the day was The Central Picture House ( aka The Flea Pit) but we weren't allowed to go there when we were really young! It closed in the late 60's and was then home to Tesco. I worked there as a late evening shelf filler on Thursday and Friday after schooland all day Saturday when i was 15. But then Tesco moved to a new built big store in town and then later even bigger store out of town. And that was the end of the busy town center of Braintree.

Oops, I guess this needs to be moved!

Well that was where United Biscuits delivered its products, I just picked orders and loaded the lorries, and orders were marked by the shop and the specific location, which was either a town, or a suburb/ area of a larger city. Small towns only had a Gateway, or a Co-op, larger places had Tesco, Sainsbury's, Somerfield, Safeway, etc.

Smaller shops and shops in small towns (most Co-ops, plus Spar, VG, etc.) received their orders in a van with shelves in it, so 15-20 orders were all stacked together and the delivery driver removed individual boxes and used a hand dolly to deliver them inside, so I never saw the names/ locations of the small shops, but anywhere from Worcester to Penzance or Swansea that had a Sainsbury's or Tesco, I remember because of the orders I picked and loaded.
