I wonder how many handguns people have for "protection" end up killing friends and family compared to how many are used in actual protection against a violent intruder.
Anytime I have heard noises in the middle of the night, I have never automatically thought intruder must jump up and fight.
He should face some sort of charge, if your going to have a gun in the house, you need to use is responsibly, not shooting into a dark hall before identifying the target, if you don't know who or what your shooting at, don't pull the damn trigger.

Even the news article cited had to balance the story with one about a woman who saved her family from a stick-up in their own home - justifying the gun ownership to them

It is odd, when I was at School we had a shooting range and were taught basic gun safety, they do not seem to do that here, well I have come across 4H but not everybody is in that.

My school's firing range was part of the CCF - which caused questions (but no problems) in naturalization as had to explain military training. As a kid it turned out I was really good and quick at striping down and building guns back up again, as well as being a marksman. CCF was really like Boy Scouts, but with guns.
