WTF in America

Re: WTF in America
Interesting one, I looked this up last night after the posts above. Apparently, the word is an American coined word, 1890s, meaning simply - executed by electricity. Over in the UK, where they never did this, the word acquired a much less specific meaning - death or injury by electric shock, including accidental. I'd never thought of this before but it makes sense.
Well there you are then. I'm a woman without a country and my vocabulary seems to reflect that Or maybe a woman with two countries, not sure.

It's why I always order wine. Even after spending half my life here, they still look befuddled if I attempt to order "water" in a restaurant.

My last name has three "rs" in it, and spelling it out over the phone is a minefield. I end up pronouncing my name as though The Wurzels were speaking it in order for them to get the spelling right.

Don't you love how the outrage-for-show is always directed at the press for somehow restricting language usage, and not the knuckle-dragging fascists who hijack the words and misuse them instead?

Exactamundo. It was a shock, not electrocution. (And it's the amperes that kill -- I doubt the ankle bracelets deliver 80kV: Tasers deliver about 2kV and generally are non-lethal. And even 4 million V won't revive a dead parrot.)

Well, don't you know, major national broadsheets like the Guardian have nothing but time on their hands to restrict language?

If you spend your time fighting imaginary enemies and chasing bollocks, you can pretend to have principles without actually having to have them.
