When I did the clubs years ago, there used to be a sticker in many of the dressing rooms that was allegedly from a band.

The Muff Divers - Always Go Down Well. Would love to know if there really was such a band.
My favourite phrase 'Waste O Space'

No, we just used it to describe useless people at work!

Useless people and things at work get called boat anchors.

I'm with Gruff on this one though. TWAT is not just a word, it's an entire concept and a state of being too.

Every language needs a word that indicates that you've evaluated a person, weighed up all their merits and failings, seen the world through their eyes, and reached the conclusion: TWAT!

Whole lives can be summed up with that single word. Particularly the lives of politicians and celebrities. I mean, just look at John Major or Michael Barrymore.

Sadly there's just no equivalent in American.

Besides calling said person a twat, would you yell at them "Oh come off it!"?

"arse"

+

"pants" (as in "this tv show is total pants")

+

"chav" (I have started using this for anyone with a redneck disposition)

I also get looked at like I have just coughed up a chicken when I shout out "C'mon you REDS!" whenever I go to the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.

apparently there have been several bands with that name.... but I can't find a connection to a song or an album called "Always Go Down Well."

In this case they could do a followup called "Go Down A Storm".

My Mam came out with a phrase I hadn't heard for years when she last visited "standing there like cheese at fourpence!" (I think it is a northern term, or maybe just used in Lancashire, I don't know!) It just means standing there looking bewildered as far as I know!
