Winter storm Juno
We're due for 14-20" of snow here, which even in Maine is a fair size storm. My husband flies out for work Monday afternoon, leaving me here with three kids, a small puppy, and a snowblower I'm not sure I'm qualified to operate.
Are all you east coasters ready? |

Re: Winter storm Juno
Looks like you might get some pretty wild snow drifts with those winds you'll be getting Monday night through Wednesday. Stay safe! Our daughter on Cape Cod is due for 8 to 12 inches which is a lot for the Cape.... fortunately, she no longer has to plow for her town.
Little or no snow forecast here, we're too far north, but it will be fairly cold, minus twenty maybe. |

I've lost count of the amount of winter power outages we had during our 18 years in NJ. So far here in Downtown Toronto...in the Great White North...we've had very little snow. There's none on the ground right now but a little is forecast tomorrow.

Re: Winter storm Juno
We are literally still waiting for a winter that probably won't come now.
Not being facetious. The insects didn't die off, the seasonal birds stayed around, weeds kept growing, I've only used the log fire @ 20% of the usual amount. I'm uneasy... |
Re: Winter storm Juno
The National Weather Service is forecasting a "blizzard of historic proportions" for NYC, with up to 30" of snow. ..... I cancelled my trip to NYC, out tomorrow, back on Tuesday evening, with my manager's approval. I will "attend by phone".
I could have got there OK tomorrow morning, but heaven only knows when I would have been able to get a flight back. |

You should consider moving somewhere where you get a proper winter, maybe, say, New England, or even eventually back to Scotland? You should give it some serious thought! |
Re: Winter storm Juno
and we were breaking record high's today courtesy of a pineapple express from Hawaii.
I wouldn't mind having some winter weather, the ski resorts would like some as well. A couple haven't even opened yet due to lack of snow. Hope all you on the east coast don't get too hard at once though, 30" of snow, never seen that much snow drop at once, can't even imagine what it's like to see that much. This year we have had some season migratory birds stick around, usually don't have any of the small birds stay, the geese stopped going south years ago, they also hang around through winter now. Luckily most insects don't stick around, but I have seen some which is not the norm. Figure at this rate, the bears will start to wake early as well. Some annual flowers have started to sprout as well. Everything seems confused this year. |

Are all you east coasters ready? I spent the day here in phx battling a bougainvillea with a hedge trimmer. I still look like and have been bathing a cat. |

Sounds terrible, I'd really miss having four seasons. It makes me wonder why you put up with it?

Re: Winter storm Juno
We are getting near record highs today and tomorrow, close to 70's. Saw a caterpiller out in the patio just now.
I got a book called Six Degrees by Mark Lynas out of the library this weekend. Oldish book on Climate change written in 2008 predicting what will happen if the earth heats up average temperatures from one degree all the way to six degrees. |

Are all you east coasters ready? We've got tap water set aside, brought wood from the wood pile into the garage to dry it out, checked all flashlights, and candles & camping equipment are ready for use. We still haven't got a generator, but I'm glad our relatives down towards NYC do... |

Re: Winter storm Juno
We have a flashlight. That's our "prep" so far (and likely to be all of it really).
The snow blower is still at our old house, so shoveling could be a PITA. |

Re: Winter storm Juno
It's my fault too. After our 48 hour power cut over Thanksgiving I talked a great talk about getting a generator. I'm good at that...
Husband's flight still shows as departing at 5.34pm. There's one more showing as OK after that, then they're all cancelled. Snow's supposed to arrive after 8pm. |
Re: Winter storm Juno
I am glad we don't get that kind of snow around here.

Re: Winter storm Juno
Light but steady snow falling here since early this morning. I've shoveled our drive twice. A gritting truck just drove round but no snowplows have come our way yet.....
The wind is what worries me here on the coast. Possible gusts of 75 MPH predicted for tonight & tomorrow. :( Hoping all these nice old trees around our house stay put..... |

We're not on the coast, but sharing your worries about the trees. We lost so many during Sandy that I'm going to have to change my location line if they keep coming down! ;) We have the chain saw all ready in case we need to chop our way out. Stay safe and warm, WEBlue.

Re: Winter storm Juno
I have been hoping for an ice storm this year, to remove the top from a leaning pine, but more than half way through our winter it is looking unlikely. :( ..... If Mother Nature would kindly remove the top I can deal with the trunk, but it would come down (just) too close to the house if I tried to fell it "as is".

Don't stories like this usually end up with someone saying "hold my beer"?
I have felled four mature pines of 60-80ft in the past two months. I had been hoping to fell one mature pine a week throughout the winter, but I have fallen short of that goal. :o |
Re: Winter storm Juno
Someone mention beer?
Thirsty after some Chinese...it's the fried rice. |

The trouble is that when they get snapped, they don't always come down. We have had some snapped tops dangling for a few years, and some that did get separated but are hung up -- all way too high for us to get to them, and in the thousands of dollars range for the arborist to come. When it gets very windy, we have to keep the dogs away from those areas.

Re: Winter storm Juno
The missus was saying how silly all the news is and how 10 years ago, this would have just been called a storm.
We're in the 24-30" pocket. |

We're in the 24-30" pocket. This doesn't mean I don't feel for you all up there. It's a pain in the arse. |
Re: Winter storm Juno
It is amusing how we're under a state of emergency and a travel ban for all non-essential folks.
It's not even all that bad yet, don't think there's even an inch of snow on the car yet. |

Lack of cars driving meant the snow built up and wasn't flattened and the grit was lost under the snow so there was just as many accidents but it was doctors/nurses/electrical folks that were either getting about to work or responding to accidents of others, getting into accidents :o |

I do have to go to work whatever the weather. The thing is, if they offer you a ride to work you negotiate a guaranteed ride back. ;) |

Mrs P and I (we always commuted together back then) agreed to wait until the traffic cleared, unless the snow became imminent. Around 4pm, with the roads deserted and still no sign of any snow whatsoever, we set off home. What was usually, in normal traffic, a 60-70 minute drive home took us less than 50 minutes. The roads were more or less deserted, less traffic on the road than I have seen in the middle of the night, at times no other moving vehicles visible in front or behind us, even on the interstate. Oh, and we got all the way home without ever seeing a flake of snow! |
Re: Winter storm Juno
Our 2 year old decided 8.45pm would be the perfect time to projectile vomit over 2 piles newly folded laundry, our bed and over the missus. Cue yours truly having to yomp to local package store a few blocks away to get $10 of quarters. Forced into buying a PBR six pack, partly to dull the pain of spending next several hours doing laundry!
