A real cake is one in which there are only 4 sometimes 5 ingredients, really.
Flour Egg Sugar Butter.
Go to any county or local fair and you will find great examples of cakes made simple, the best way.
But buying any food item in a store in the US these days is a mind field of High Fructose Corn Syrup (evil) and other nastiness that puts me right off buying them.

Why would anyone buy a store bought cake when it is easy enough to make yourself and/or get from a good bakery?
As for HFC don't know what everyone is complaining about. Sugar is sugar no matter what it is derived from.
Aren't there enough America bashing threads already on this forum without having to resort to yet another one?

So don't buy in a store. What's the big f'ing deal. There are bakeries even in Phoenix and I'm sure that you and your wife know how to turn on the oven.

Nobody in their right Phoenician mind turns the oven on in their kitchen in July!

From some standpoints, yes. However each one is metabilised by the body differently. Fructose and HFCS, especially in high doses which aren't really that hard to hit since it's in so many products, can cause fat retention around the belly area, is thought to contribute to metabloc syndrome, raise blood pressure, LDL, triglyicerides and insulin resistance. One of the issues that type diabetics can have from it fructose doesn't trigger the beta cells of the pancreas like glucose does so less insulin is produced which can lead to higher blood sugar than an equivalent (in sweetness terms) amount of sugar. Fructose is also heavily linked to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and "ties up" the liver because it's top of the list for to be metabolized and messes up the communications between the liver and the pancreas so the hormones that are meant to make you feel full when you are eating are not released correctly and the hormones that are released when you are hungry are not shut off.
