I couldn't imagine doing that. I simply go in and ask for it in British English. It infuriates me how a person cannot understand a simple word like the ones you list. I could understand an American saying them in their accent, so why can't they understand them in mine? I guess it says a lot about the general intelligence level.

I think so, I was thinking if making more-or-less the same observation. .... To which I would add, ".... and more so if they do not expect to return to the UK to live".

I've looked into British schools for them to be taught with other English kids to ensure their accent is British, not American, but that said I think when / if we start a family a decision would need to be made as to when to return to the UK.

We don't get much fog here but I use them in blizzard conditions such as today where visibility is low.

BTW unless there is something severely wrong with your hearing, I think you'll find that there are rather more American accents than the "one" you credit America with.

Maybe it's just hearing the god awful Boston accent each day that has brought out such dislike of the 'American' accent.
