I don't necessarily think they should understand my accent, although 'water' in a restaurant is a strange one

I hear the pronunciation of that word here and groan. I would be devastated if our children (yet to be born I stress!) grew up pronouncing words this way.

I think so, I was thinking if making more-or-less the same observation. .... To which I would add, ".... and more so if they do not expect to return to the UK to live".

You can't really expect them to grow up with British accents, though.

I've looked into British schools for them to be taught with other English kids to ensure their accent is British, not American, but that said I think when / if we start a family a decision would need to be made as to when to return to the UK.

Probably best to go back if you feel that strongly. But then your wife will think they talk funny

We don't get much fog here but I use them in blizzard conditions such as today where visibility is low.

The difference is, my wife loves the British accent. I just don't find anything redeeming about the American one. I wish I felt differently, but I just don't.

Well you do live in Bahston!

BTW unless there is something severely wrong with your hearing, I think you'll find that there are rather more American accents than the "one" you credit America with.

Maybe it's just hearing the god awful Boston accent each day that has brought out such dislike of the 'American' accent.

For me, it's force of habit. I don't hold onto the British pronunciations (most of them, I've gone septic on some terminoloy though) out of any reason other that that's what my mouth automatically shapes itself to say.

As mentioned before, everyone knows what I am on about all the time so it makes no odds to me.

It's hardly their fault - that can't hear me all the way over there.

They understood me in Kentucky though, it shares a border with your state, right?
