I personally think Lewis Black is the funniest followed closely by Dave Chapelle.

I don't really follow stand up these days
Chris Rock back in the 90s.
Eddie Murphy circa 1982.
Richard Pryor before him.
Bob Newhart before him.

Lewis Black is a genius. His delivery and material is amazing.
I also love Craig Shoemaker, Jim Gaffigan, Kathleen Madigan, Judy Gold, Etta May, Mitch Fatel, Mitch Hedburg (RIP), George Lopez, Mike Birbiglia.
I don't understand the whole George Carlin thing. Him and Dennis Miller. Played out.

He's an emaciated old man now, just bitching and whining, reminded me of Andy Rooney on 60 minutes. As you say, played out and had his day.
Anyone remember Gallagher and his watermellon mallets, used to like him when I first got here. Not even sure if he is still around

I like Jerry Seinfeld. Can't say I ever watched his TV show but I've seen him in stand up a few times and he's hilarious. His jokes remind me very much of the Big Yin...Billy Connolly.

Oh yeah, I likes me some Seinfeld too. In fact, I've really started watching that show on a regular basis now. Missed it first time around. Might have to get the DVDs.
And ditto to LordLionheart re: Carlin. I know he was a pioneer, but he does come across as some crotchety old get-orf-my-lawn guy. And his material is stale.
I never got the melon smashing Gallagher. Sort of like Mr Blobby on Noel Edmonds. I never understood while people found that funny.
Also, another great one is Lisa Lampanelli.

In a similar vein is 'Curb your enthusiasm' starring Larry David who co-wrote Seinfeld, similar but more blue and non censored material including sex and race as it's on HBO not network TV. Probably my favorite sitcom now

Re: Who is you favourite US comedian?
Not that old chestnut again. I guess so as half the comedies on British TV are American.
Here's today's UK listings;
http://www.tvguide.co.uk/?systemid=&gridspan=09:00
Friends, MASH, Seinfeld, Taxi, Cheers, The Simpsons, Entourage, Curb your Enthusiam, Get Smart, The Munsters, I Love Lucy, Scrubs, MY name is Earl, Family Guy, King of the Hill, Everybody loves Raymond, Frasier etc. etc
The prevalence of US TV shows also explains our ( and the worlds) understanding of US culture, accents etc.
