You live in the same one I do mate. You live in the one where if you want to say Merry Christmas you can, if you want to say Happy Holidays you can as well. No one forces you, and you know like I do that it's a melting pot here and we all celebrate different holidays and why not just combinee them and say Happy Holidays if we want...or if we don't then that's ok as well

I don't think they could give a toss about sensitivity to other peoples religions in those days. I think (think) Happy Holidays is a lot more recent, isn't it(?), and totally aimed at avoiding offending anyone of a different religion.
Personally I dont like HH, and can't imagine ever sending a card with it on, or worse, actually uttering it to someone (although I said the same about tomaytoe and find myself saying that all the time now, so never say never....), but I wouldn't be upset about receiving one with that, and if folk want to send it, why not?

I hadn't actually realized, but the cards we sent this year didn't refer to Christmas - one said "joy to you and the world" with a picture of a globe and kids from around the world, and the other was a christmas tree with the wording "wishing you whatever makes you merry", which I guess covers a whole host of options!

Out of interest, and boredom, I looked at our cards this year - we've got about 40 so far, and only 3 say HH - and they are all the ones from friends with the whole family in matching sweaters and cheesy grins. All of the others have some variation of Merry Christmas or Seasons Greetings - including ones from moslem, hindu, shinto and buddhist friends. Oh, and a jewish friend sent us a homemade Hannukkah card with a winking smiley face after Happy Hannukah.

I didn't know what it was either till the kids started school. Around this time of year in first grade they do a "Holidays around the world" project that has a seperate page for Hannukkah, Kwanzaa, Deepavali, Ramadan etc....in fact, just about anything apart from Christmas and Easter which are studiously avoided.

Indeed HH is more recent, but whatever the reasoning behind SG and HH, today they serve the same purpose: to be neutral!

As far as I'm concerned Happy Holidays refers to the summer months...with sand, sun and sea.

Tried to give you Karma & screwed it up. Trying to say, "you can please some of the people all of the time........." works here.

Tbh if people are going to be offended by the use of the word Christmas, why carry on regardless with all the Christmas stuff (trees, cards etc) and just change the name to Holidays? Surely those offendees aren't stupid enough to not realise it's just Xmas dressed up under another name? So to make sure we don't offend these people, surely we should stop putting up Xmas trees in malls and shops and stop having parties at the unmentionable time of year?

Just out of interest, could you tell me what sort of people you know who are offended by Christmas? I'm just curious, as like I said, I work with a Jewish lady, a Muslim and my boss who is a Hindu, and they are all happy for us to decorate the office, they receive and send Christmas cards and attend our Christmas lunch. If they didn't want to attend, nobody would force them, though I have to admit that were they to complain that we shouldn't be able to go for Christmas lunch, I would find that rather unpleasant and killjoyish.

The UK (and the USA) were founded on Christian principles although everyone is free to practice whatever religion that want (or not at all) in both countries. I don't see how trying to kill tradition is helpful. I mean, if I moved to India (or Southall for that matter), I'd expect everything to be about Diwali and I wouldn't be offended by that, I would probably join in with the Diwali traditions as well as Christmas ones.
You've echoed my thoughts extremely well. Why don't people employ a little reason and tolerance? We worked with a Jewish couple who weren't offended by Christmas - they just ignored the reason for the holiday, but used it to curry favor with others with "Christmas gifts"! I can't say I've ever met or spoken to anyone who was offended by the word or the celebration. Now, they may have gotten p-waddy tired of all the rigamarole that goes along with it and the commercialism - but not the ritual, itself.
