Today I was asked if I was Irish or English.....by a Liverpudlian.

I speak with a not-too-strong Aussie accent.

I constantly get asked what part of Ireland are you from. My daughter and her friend were having a conversation with each other and the one of the guys who was sitting listening to them, asked them were they talking in German

I had to laugh though when my middle daughter came home from school looking not so impressed. When I asked her what was up, she said that someone in her class had asked her, what language did she speak. She was most put out by this and replied "the same language as you!!!" I have found that a lot of American kids have no idea about where Scotland is, that it's attached to England and is part of Great Britain or the United Kingdom. But I also get told constantly that people luv to hear me talk and "could listen to my accent all day". Pity my husband doesn't feel the same way

As an aside, that reminds me. My Dad who is normally very informed about world issues once said to me that Persia was "pretty close" to Morocco - I still remind him of this on occasion.

People generally get my accent fairly close round here, I'm from Yorkshire and they ask if I'm from Liverpool because I "sound like the Beatles" - slightly bizarre to me as I've always thought the Scouse accent was very different to other Northern accents, but geographically not a bad effort. When they start trying to do British accents they normally DO sound Australian though
