Best, the weather doesn't try to kill me, doesn't destroy my property, and rarely makes driving difficult, .... worst? ..... A strange obession with basketball.

I've lived in NC for the past 4 or so months... So far the best thing apart from being with my wife is the good food and common courtesy expressed.

So you think Donald Trump is "half crazy"? It sounds like you're warming up to him.

Illinois. I like the food. Don't like the 55mph interstate speed limits in the Chicago area. 70 or GTFO.
It's also very flat and boring, and it snows. That's shite too.

I am a USC but I moved to the State of Mississippi in June of 2016 to be with my husband in the home we purchased as a retirement home. I am originally from the State of New York.
Mississippi is one of the most bigoted and racial areas I have ever been to in my 68 years. There is no diversity here, no culture, and no decent shopping.
Lower New York State is surrounded with areas of beauty, i.e. woodlands, ocean, rivers and lakes for relaxation and exploration, museums of quality, theater, music, etc.
I utterly dislike Mississippi and if hubby dies before me, I will be out of here as soon as he is cremated, the house packed up and listed with a real estate agent. I will return to the NE, preferably to a town north of New York City or in the Finger Lakes region of the State.

Northern Illinois upsides:
The people are generally friendly, smart, interesting, humble and unpretentious. The open faced woman with blonde bangs and an accent as flat at the Kansas plains? Yeah, she has a law degree from Yale and spent ten years in Vienna. You should talk to her.
Chicago is a cosmopolitan city. Good restaurants, good culture, people from everywhere.
Brats and good beer. Seriously, the beer in Chicago is diverse and excellent.
If you can afford to live in a pricey town, you get really good schools for the kids. I've been impressed.
It's not absurdly expensive compared to, say, San Francisco.
The public facilities are nice in upscale towns. The public pools are immaculately maintained waterparks. The schools are all brand new. The library is silent, beautiful and chock full of goodies.
Northern Illinois downsides:
If you take a walk, they'll tax your feet. Seriously, taxes here suck, and it's all being stolen.
It's a physically ugly part of the USA. I moved here from New England. New England is beautiful. Illinois? Not so much.
When you leave Chicagoland, it turns out that it's extremely Midwestern around here (may be an upside for some). Corn is heavily featured.
The cycling isn't great. Hope you like flat.
Suburban monoculture is a real thing. I submit that Naperville is Stepford incarnate.
Parts of the city have the violence levels of Cartegena circa 1986, no jobs, horrible schools, no good food and harsh policing. As this doesn't affect anyone who doesn't actually live there few people outside care. It sucks to be poor in Illinois. This pisses me off.
