Which reminds me, the town just a few miles west of us ( or south, according to the road system ...) they invented Life-Savers. There's a giant package of Pep-O-Mint Life SaversĀ®, larger than life, right there on the village green.

Quite possibly. I don't really go out much though, unless I'm playing somewhere.

I should accompany my posts with a /sarcasm tag sometimes.

Some may think legalized cannabis is a good thing, but Portland is no Amsterdam.

Portland has terrible public transport compared to almost anywhere in Europe. I cannot compare it to other parts of the US. It also has pretty bad congestion, 12th worse in the US. I guess that does mean there are at least 11 other places which are worse.

Study: Portland ranks 12th in traffic congestion in U.S. - KPTV - FOX 12.

I must just have different experiences of the systems.

The desert , mountains , forests and the coast are quite amazing. They also invented tater tots in Oregon.

I left Portland in the early 2000s. I thought it had awesome public transport. Between Max and TriMet, you can get dam near anywhere. Bus schedules are also quire frequent.

Compare to the places I lived in the US, Portland has the best public transport.

Portland has the highest number of bookstores, strip clubs and breweries per capita .

Don't forget the vegan strip club.

Me, for starters? Steak for breakfast! :)

I particularly love the South Dakotan countryside. There is a beach just outside of Vermillion near a town called Burbank. I sit on the banks of the Missouri in the summers and autumns, and it's silent.

The sunsets aren't bad too!

Nothing bad to say about Portland. One of the nicest most pleasant cities I've visited.

Bartenders! Its nice to go into a bar and ask for something simple like a Cosmo and them actually knowing what you're talking about!
Ask a barman in UK, they think you will be talking about a member of UB40!

What's wrong with an honest working class bar anyway? Not free-range and artisan enough for you pretentious city types?

Anyway, I like how easy it is to get around here. Not that it is necessarily easier than anywhere else, but once you learn the convention for numbered US highways and interstates that odd numbers go north-south and even numbers go east-west (with x0 being coast to coast and x5 being longer north-south routes) you can usually find your way back on track after being lost if you can find one of those roads and know your control cities.

The variety of landscape.
The general family orientation of most things.

Also, spurs off highways start with the same number as the highway (522 comes off I-5), and parallel offshoot highways end in the same number (405 runs parallel to I-5)

I think your interpretation is off, generally an extra digit gets added to the front of the main interstate number that the side branch or loop is connected to - there are a couple of Wikipedia pages on the subject.

So I77 has a 277 offshoot loop, I85 has a 485 loop, as well as 185, 285, and other offshoots. I40 has numerous offshoots and loops as it crosses the entire country, all of them in the pattern x40.

Although I never thought of the US as 'home' there are many things I like and miss. Variety of landscapes...the snow covered mountains and glaciers of Alaska, the Grand Canyon/Bryce/Zion, the varying coastline east and west.
