What do you stock up on when visiting UK?
I'm going back to the UK in a few weeks for my sisters wedding, spending 10 days there.
I always use this time to stock up on the items that i somewhat miss since moving to the US. For me: Cadbury's Fingers, Galaxy ripples (the gf goes crazy for these) Custard creams, Twinings extra strong tea. and a jar of extra large marmite for my friend, i hate the stuff. I find that alot of my US friends love this chocolate too and it doesnt last long before it's distributed between my friends! Anyone else regularly do this on trips back to UK? |

Why Ibuprofen and paracetamol? And how can you stock up on them when they are only sold in tiny amounts compared to the giant bottles you can get over here?
Also I get my family to collect packets of them before we make a UK visit. |

I live in Italy where they are very expensive. How to stock up? keep going through the tills at supermarkets- it's time consuming but amusing. Tesco, Ibuprofen 96 pill box about £2.

Oh, I see - sorry, assumed you were living in the US....
The only thing I bring to the U.S. from England is tea. |

Re: What do you stock up on when visiting UK?
Tea for me too. It's light and, if you toss out the box & put the teabags into plastic bags, very easy to pack....
Also the little dispensers of tablet no-calorie sweeteners, whichever kind is cheapest, Sweetex, Canderel, store brands. (Don't know WHY they don't have these here in the US! So sick of the wasteful paper packets.) Lemsip & those vitamin C+zinc dissolving disks that come in the tube. |
Re: What do you stock up on when visiting UK?
A lot of stuff is available here, like Marmite, Heinz Salad Cream, biscuits, HP Sauce, Ambrosia Devon Custard and Rice Pudding, Sharwoods curry sauces, Branston etc. - at least it is around my way or within a short drive (Publix international aisle)!
It may be expensive, but not as much as a plane ticket! I once brought a couple of giant jars of Branston back because they were on sale in Asda for two quid for two!! |
Re: What do you stock up on when visiting UK?
Vimto cordial concentrate.
|
Re: What do you stock up on when visiting UK?
Bedding. Towels. Clothes. Shoes. Beechams powders. As many good books as is practicable.
I'm in New Zealand. |
Re: What do you stock up on when visiting UK?
Heinz salad cream, Heinz curried beans and Sharwoods curry powder, Battenburg cakes, Scottish heather honey. I think that's about it, as I can't bring back what I really want to because of their rules on meat products, and I've not seen mealie puddings on sale here, and it is not white pudding as I tried that thinking it was the same. I eat it as often as I can when I'm over there.

I walked down the international isle this morning, where I know they sell a few British groceries, though I didn't buy anything. I saw the signs for Asian, Indian, Mexican and Italian groceries but no sign either above or on the shelves (as all other countries/regions had) for British groceries, which were conveniently marked like this:

I know there are some places you can buy products from the UK, but I've noticed a lot of them are made over here in the US, and are ever so slightly different as opposed to the original UK locations. Only a few odd places actually import from the UK. (Speaking for Texas anyhow) I also find out which colleagues i have flying into town for business and put in an order with them  Oh, and being a Bristol boy means i drank cider back in the UK, and i found the total wine store. They have my favourite cider - Thatchers! but at $10 for 4 small bottles it's only the odd time i get some |
Re: What do you stock up on when visiting UK?
I used to buy fire blankets, but now they have started selling them in home depot. Sometimes I will bring back a few coins and notes to add to my collection.

Re: What do you stock up on when visiting UK?
Duvet covers!
I generally take a spare suitcase with me so I can bring it back fully loaded - biscuits, mostly (the choccy bar kind) and some cakes. |

Just to put your mind at ease: I have 2 growing kids whose interests change and who grow out of wanting Frozen/Hello Kitty/Cinderella/whatever else relatively quickly. Is a new duvet cover every couple of years considered extravagant or something? |

Just curious. We have two duvet covers and sheet sets, (plus the one we had in London when we were first married, which is only a queen size and we use on the guest bed) though in fairness one set is due for replacement imminently. Little Miss P also has two, and she has arguably outgrown the Tinker Bell set, so that will be replaced soon.

For me it would be - Marmite, Harribo Starmix (and Moam, laces.etc .etc), Anything Cadbury's Wheat Crunchies (Don't judge me). Hob Nobs Ribena. I can get some of the above in my local Stop'n'shop, but at their prices it's cheaper to fly home and get it. probably. Next time I'm in the UK I *may* also actually pick up some of my crap I left at my parents house. |
Re: What do you stock up on when visiting UK?
I bet you could pack a lot of Hobnobs in a duvet cover.
