Hate to tell you but if it's one of the big electronics sales you need to be there overnight. (I'm glad I'm just pixels incase you find yourself to be the only idiot freezing your arse off.)

Myself, I put up the Christmas tree and drink and sing to the Muppets version of The Twelve Days of Christmas.

Black Friday is essentially marketing hype to generate foot traffic in stores and encourage people to buy loads of stuff they can't really afford. A great day for avoiding malls and their attendant traffic jams and overcrowding.

this is my fav site so far. I go in daily and do my shoping list. You might joke .. but cvs is also on my list. playtex for 99cents!! Sears for a tv. I am going to be darting all over the place. Took the day off extra. Going to pick up my sister, and my brother is coming over on Sunday for a week and he is going to get roped into my little excursion.

That is the trick, organize it like a military operation, make a list (check it twice) and scour the ads. I did that our first Christmas back in the States-we had just bought this house, had to buy all new appliances for it and I wasn't working. It paid off.

I did it one year and I will never do it again

After the first store (Target) I was ready to go home unfortunately my expert shopper friends were not so I parked myself at a Starbucks and waited for them to finish

We're sitting down tomorrow and making our list to email to the outlaws so they can do it all for us....

Hopefully when (if) we arrive before Christmas we will have no shopping to do!

For any deal you can find on Black Friday, I'm confident I can find a better deal online sometime during the year.

Obviously I'm not including the genuine "door busters" like $5 plasma TVs or a $20 Nintendo Wii, but I'll include whatever crappy laptop Best Buy has on "special offer". TracyM, you are aware that Best Buy is ~30% more expensive for all its electronics than many reputable online stores, aren't you?

It does cost more to operate a brick and mortar store.

I spent a few years at a big box retailer and on black Friday we would bring in over 250k on that day, a normal Friday saw 35-40k in sales.

I made the mistake of popping into a Super Target in a shopping center next to the megamall in Durham this past weekend.

It was absolutely chaotic in the Super Target parking lot and the parking lot for the mall was pretty much full.

I've now decided I will avoid the whole area at weekends between now and the end of the year.

I should have used numbers....

My husband's the cloggie. He's been here close to three years now.... his perspective on sales are that it's fun to get a bargain, but most bargains here are only found on crap goods. Now, if he could find quality things like zware shag and Costa Rican coffee for 10 cents per kilo.... that would be a bargain.

You need to find out how many they are going to have at each store so that will give you an idea of what kind of a chance you may realisticly have if you show up later.
That was (shudder) the hour I was thinking of. Still can't believe I'm thinking of doing this...

LOL don't worry, I'm afraid I don't consider a laptop deal worth camping out for. Getting up a little early is ok, but...

I've never gone shopping on that stupid busy day, and it'll be just for the one thing if I do.

If you can find a better deal online, I would be SO delighted. I'm still looking, but haven't yet.

Generally I don't buy anything at Best Buy. But supposedly this is a good deal I've been told for $379.99:

Toshiba AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core Notebook Computer w/3GB Memory, 160GB Hard Drive

I'd be delighted with any better suggestion though. This is for a gift - all it needs to be able to do is get on the internet, and word processing. Looking for low end here - but one that works. And not a mini - at least 14" screen.
