Walmart RANT!!

Okay, so I was in Walmart this morning, a trip that I don't relish at any given moment in time. But anyway, there's a guy who delivers the bread/rolls and stacks the shelves with the aforementioned items. So, he had already accosted me in Big Y during the winter with the most ridiculous chat up line I've ever heard, and he knew by my reaction, I wasn't impressed. So...... this morning I walked straight in to him  and he decides to try again with the what country are you from again, are you married.......spew, spew..... Now, back in Glasgow, I've never been approached by anyone, male or female and am quite shocked how forward some people are over here, much as I like 99% of people who I've bumped into. So, now not only do I have a stalker in Big Y who collects the shopping carts and makes sure if I'm in the store, to have some excuse to come over and "have a chat"!!, I now have this idiot who just happens to deliver bread/rolls to every store I go into, and have a pervert named Pete who approached me on Friday with the line "Hi, my name's Pete and I'm a photographer, I think you'd make a great subjetc":blink: WTF!!!

Is it me, have I got "any pervert, loony, or generally in your face person, please approach" tattoed on my forehead, or is this the way people are over here. Please, I'm not complaining about the people who live/work where I live, I'm just a bit shocked at people's forwardness and find it quite shocking. Or am I just being a moany faced Scot who can't take a compliment?? Opinions please..........

Well you aren't ranting about the store, Walmart, but rather ranting about one of their off premise delivery people.

You are most probably being hit on because you are attractive, relatively new to the area, appear approachable, i.e. facial expression appears open and friendly, etc.

Now you can be the lady and polite tell each of them the next time they approach that you are not interested and do feel uncomfortable being approached by strangers such a manner. If that doesn't work, be the Brat that you say you are and ask their names, tell the manager of Wal-Mart and call the bakery company and report their driver.

Ditto to everything Rete said. "That's very nice of you, but I'm busy and if you'll excuse me I need to get on." About turn and ignore; if they persist, straight to the service desk! Unfortunately, some of the Big Y cart guys are developmentally handicapped, so he may not understand that he is overstepping the line. If he's not one of them, run over his toes!

That's a good point.

Funnily enough now you mention it there's a man who sells bread at the Farmer's Market who makes me feel uncomfortable, it's more of a smouldering demeanor though. Perhaps the yeast makes them frisky

We have that with the baggers at Stop n Shop. You do have to be careful what you say because they take offense so easily.

Americans have a reputation for being more upfront and friendly than Brits. The old joke about an American sitting next to you on the plane and the family photos are out before you've taken off, comes to mind.

If fact I've seen that happen on the Alamo bus from PDX to the lot, a 5 minute drive. Two people who had not met before getting on the shuttle bus had their photos out before we got to the lot.

At least he didn't make a, "I'd like to get my hands on your baps darlin" line. I would just take comfort in the knowledge that the forwardness of men in the US means that you are more certain of which men you meet are masturbating about you at night. Whilst rubbing a loaf of cheese-bread on themselves. Probably.

I used to have this woman where I would go to buy coffee on the way to work always very loudly calling me her "sexy British guy" every time I went in there. It was okay at first but then it would just get ridiculous. I'd say, "could I have a latte please?" and she'd tell me I sound just like James Bond. Who at the time was played by an Irish 50 year old. I eventually stopped going in there because she started telling me what she was up to out of work - as if maybe I was interested in joining her at the local Speedway. Or in getting drunk in the shitty bars in the nearest city which are always being raided for people selling crystal meth.

You know - just like James Bond.

You guys are probably right, but I find it quite hard to be rude in someone's face, and I have thought about approaching the manager guy in Big Y because it's got so bad that I now don't go in and I'd never want to offend the poor guy because he seems harmless, so I send my OH there instead on his way home. Maybe I'm just over reacting and should take it as a compliment :)

I'd have no qualms about being rude to the bread guy, but I understand your reticence with the cart guy. I'm sure that you have been kind to him -- and very few of the patrons are! -- so that he has attached himself to you and is thrilled to see you. I think that you just have to be very firm -- "Nice to see you, but no time to talk, and I mustn't keep you from your work" and march straight ahead and ignore him. Does he follow you once you are in the store? If so, wait until you are adjacent to another store employee and say something like "Are you following me? Can I help you?" and hopefully he'd either get the hint or be sent back to work by the employee.

Yeah, might try that approach. This morning was a guy in his 50's in Bethel Food, admiring my back tattoo  Apparently he'd noticed it as I was walking in the store and wanted to tell me how nice he thought it was  Maybe I'm in the Twilight Zone

It's called being friendly. You are an adult and should be able to handle it without reporting the guy and losing him his job. Just remember in 20 years time you'll most probably have turned into a fat old hag and be desperate for the attentions of any male.

I accept it's probably people being genuinely friendly, but I just find it a bit too full on, and I never said I was going to report anyone???? And as for the fat old hag, I don't think I'll really be giving a shit when I'm 62 :p

Leslie, I've never thought of it like that. I got my tattoos because I wanted them for me as they have a particular meaning, and most of the time people can't see them. It's nice that the guy was saying how much he liked it, I still am having a hard time with the willingness of people here to talk to complete strangers, so maybe I'll just need to bloody well get used to it :)

Don't bet on it. As for getting used to strangers talking to you, well that's part of the "new world" - I always thought that was a nice thing (unless they were 'creepy' of course) and enjoy a brief conversation with a total stranger most of the time. No involvement, no obligation, no struggling to find something to say when it's all been said. And end it with the oft-scorned "Have a nice day!".;) BTW, I'm a fat old 72 and HATE being treated as though I wasn't there - just a feeble old lady who's in the way. My body betrays me, but I'm young in spirit!:p
