Default Veteran checks wrong box, gets arrested.

Good Lord, surely there's more to this story?

A veteran applies for a passport in 2004, discards the application, then reapplies. Gets passport, then is arrested three months later for saying he hadn't applied before. I wonder what the full story is?

Read it - I'm curious though - if he never completed it and threw it away, how the the passport office know he'd even HAD a previous application?? Did someone go through his garbage?

Top Tip: The local teevee isn't the place for very good reporting; how did you hear about this story?

The local paper is usually a good spot to start.
They clearly sourced the New York Times article which kicked it off.

Illegal immigrant. According to his lawyer, anyway.

The prior discarded application must be a red herring. As Egg and Cress pointed out, unless he submitted something, how the passport agency by any wiser that he once had the application form in his possession?

Ah that makes more sense. It will be interesting to compare and contrast to how this other story plays out:

Jose Vargas v. Elisha Dawkins

Oy. On the passport charges yes. He still faces deportation when his probation is done.

It still sucks, if he was a legal immigrant, his military service would have fast-tracked his naturalization (from what I have been led to believe).

He has shown more patriotism than many naturally born citizens, IMO, he should be naturalized.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's the eventual outcome.

DEPORTATION?? PROBATION?! Being old enough to be a dyed-in-the-wool Cinderella Syndrome sufferer, I have to believe someone will fix this! If the guy had deliberately duped the gov't & public, it'd be different - but according to what I've read, he'd been raised from an infant to believe he was a citizen!

I posted this link before. Trust me when I tell you that service to the US does not necessarily preclude xenophobia.

No wonder my feet hurt! The glass slippers are pinching like H#**. Didn't know about the recruiting methods - beginning to believe there's a lot I and a lot of other US cits don't know.
