We had a gov't scientist last year who was a bit too vocal about the previous government and PM during the election, he ended up retiring but he was suspended pending an investigation.

The Hatch Act of 1939 prohibits US executive branch employees (i.e. most of the government) from engaging in political activities. It's been challenged a few times but the courts have refused to overturn the ban on these activities. US military personnel are exempt, but not civilian DoD employees.

There are some limits on social media, but not everything is banned (for example it's ok to do a 'Like' on something on your own time). That said many government employees prefer the 'safe not sorry' option of just dropping all political discussion from their personal feeds.

There is generally bi-partisan support for the Hatch Act and it was recently modified in 2012.

Wouldn't it be great if everyone just stopped with all the political bullshit on social media, full stop?

I just want to look at shitposts and dank memes, not to find out that half my friends list are frothing right-wing weirdos, one box of Reynolds Wrap away from being institutionalized
