Re: United airlines PR disaster
I haven't read every word of this thread, but has anyone read just why the airline was so adamant that this man must be the one to exit the plane? He obviously explained that he was a doctor and had to be on duty the next day -- why didn't they try to find someone more willing to get off?

This story is like a rotten onion. Layers and layers of despicable human behavior. I can't think of a single player in this awful story who listened to the better angels of their nature.

Remember these employees probably earn 20k a year. They don't get paid enough to think how to deal with moody customers. They are just trying to do their job.

Not the best company to work for
Pros
Benefits package is good which includes free flights on 3 different airlines
Free bagels on Friday's
Conveniently located by 465
Cons
Currently going through bankruptcy
Pay is low
No loyalty towards employees; everyone is for self
No work/life balance
Management across the board sucks; always showing favoritism and not being fair amongst the people on their team
Not a very professional environment at times

Overbooking shouldn't be allowed anyway. If seats are needed for airline employees to get to another city for job related reasons it would be more sensible to leave 2 or 3 or 4 seat available for that purpose. Asking for volunteers to give up their seats and when there are no volunteers forcing people to do so smacks too much of the army way of doing things.

Re: United airlines PR disaster
To me this isn't so much a United Airlines problem, as an general attitude expressed by anyone in even a slight position of authority in the US. From the hostility and militarization of the police, to the the abject rudeness of the CBP and TSA. It's a cultural thing, and I don't see it changing any time soon.
In the US, the guiding principle is :- might is right. And that principle over-rides all others. Whether it's politicians, the military, cops, employers or corporations, if you can get away with it, that makes it ok - & the majority of Americans instinctively support that.
