UK Student Loans

Re: UK Student Loans
I didn't think UK university education was completely 'free'. I seem to remember applying for a grant, they assessed my parents income and indicated how much my parents had to pay to send me versus how much of a grant i would get. Anyway with that and guaranteed summer holiday employment in seaside resort town I left without any debt.

Re: UK Student Loans
I was banking on them not being the cleverest of bunches. I was paying automatically through PAYE and now in the US I am not paying. I AM planning on continuing to pay monthly although a smaller sum than I was paying in the UK.
I was hoping that because I was continuing to pay they would not flag it up in their system?

I will be a good citizen and continue to pay merely because my US stint is likely to last not much longer than 2 years, I'd like to keep this one debt ticking downwards.

Re: UK Student Loans
I pay 40 quid a month via direct debit from a UK account - my choice to do this. I complete a form annually which I submit to the SLC, along with a letter from my husband that confirms he provides me and our family with financial support.

Hey I built a 10 year strong career on Media Studies. Unless you're going into research, something heavily medical or legal or an area like writing a book about your subject, a vocational degree is always going to land you a job, quickly. Always. Media Studies was snubbed as a useless degree ... it really isn't, but you have to intern to get a start in whatever media industry you get into.
I'm aware that many people with drive and ambition will indeed have forged a career there but I'm really referring to those who considered it the easy option for obtaining a degree without the academically rigorous part

Incidentally, I know quite a few people who did Media Studies at uni through a close friend who also did this awful degree. None of them actually did anything media related bar a few runners jobs. They are all on no more than 30k a year and 30 plus. What a total waste of a higher education. At 30 one should be earning at least 60k.

Re: UK Student Loans
When it was 'free', only a limited number of UK students would go the university. Now all and sundry can go to university, 60% I would hazard gain absolutely nothing by attending given they graduate and do jobs which use none of their higher education 'skills' and struggle to earn more than 20-30k in a lifetime.

I would say the same situation exists in the UK as well. This is what a 50% target of higher education attainment has done :/

Don't apologise Hotscot. Media Studies is a complete _joke_ of a degree. It symbolises all that is wrong with modern universities.

I don't know if there is an official policy in California, but high schools aim to have as many of their students accepted into college each year, so their stats look good regardless if those students actually complete university.
