Default Travelling by air with memory problems

I am trying to get my mother over for a short holiday around Thanksging, the problem is she has been having mini strokes for years apparently, and this has left her with short term memory problems and she doesn't think she can come over. My wife an I have decided to pay for direct flights from Heathrow to DFW rather than have lay overs if she decided she wants to come. Is there any assistance the airline and/or airports can give her navigating the airport and so on given her condition?

Yes indeed. British Airways offer "escorts" through the terminal. I had a good experience with this kind of service when my young nephew came to visit. They have a range of categories in which a person can fall into for assistance, whether it just be an escort for a minor, or someone with a disability. I would bet all major airlines offer the same service. Good luck.

But do make sure that you can get some health insurance coverage for her before she gets on a plane. If she had a problem in the US it could prove very costly.

My mother has similar issues, and came over for a month at Xmas.
What we did was book her the wheelchair escort. My brother took her to the airport in Scotland and checked her in, I collected her from the wheelchair escort in Phoenix, did the reverse for the flight back. The one issue is that someone took her bag of the conveyer in the baggage hall and she had a hard time recognizing it as was new. I would suggest some big labels or other marking on the baggage to help the wheelchair escort recognize the bag for her.

All airlines offer assistance services. You just need to notify them in advance once you have booked the tickets and they will set it up for someone to meet her at the check in desk, get her to the flight and then meet her at the other end. Be sure to let them know exactly what assistance she will need on both ends.
