Tracing 401K

Tracing 401K
My DH had a 401K when he worked in Boston for a company called CORE which was located in Copley Plaza there. I mentioned recently that he may as well get the money back, however we have no idea how to go about it. He only worked there for 18 months but we cannot find the company on the internet, so I suspect it no longer exists. It was about 17 years ago. DH has lived in the UK since and is now a UK citizen. I know that if he cashed it in he would have to pay US tax on it.
Does anybody know of a way to trace the funds? Is there a central place 401Ks are held? DH has a SSN so should be able to prove it is his. We have no idea how much it is but I suspect only a small amount. Might as well claim it though.
Thanks and sorry to be so clueless!

Generally, these sites are connected to state governments. I think all states have laws governing how institutions are meant to deal with abandoned funds. I was contacted once about a savings account from a bank that I previously had multiple accounts but had not had activity in several years. I thought it was ridiculous because I hadn't forgot about the account and I was deliberately leaving it there as an emergency fund. They made me close the account. Whatever.

Possibly. I've never used Turbo Tax.

It was 9 pence! Believe me, I told them how unhappy I was!

Since the account is a 401K investment account, why would the government, either state or federal, have it listed as unclaimed. As a retirement account it is only claimable (without penalty) at age 59-1/2 and therefore, should still be active and hopefully, making money.
