We gave a bottle of wine as a Thank You, he was delighted with it.
He really did everything he could for us.

There should be a gift...a housewarming gift from the realtor to you.

6% skim off the house sale is enough isn't it?

I suppose you could tell them to replace the 20 year old photo they use on their business cards...

I'll echo the sentiment that the gift should be from realtor to customer. Anything else is just madness!

Don't forget the realtors don't get to keep all the commission, they have to share it with the broker of the agency.

But never heard of the custom to tip agents, at my wifes work the agents provide a bottle of wine a card and usually a gift card of sorts to the client once everything is closed and settled.

If the wine is any good, no clue, they have boxes of it as the broker buys in bulk.

We've always received a gift from the realtor, generally flowers.

Ours made approx $12.5k after splitting the commission with the other realtor. Needless to say we receive a Christmas card from her every year.

My friend once got a call from his financial advisor saying 'Hey I have a gift for you, I'll be at the house in a few minutes.' Turned up and handed my friend a bag of lobsters.

Only in Maine?

Some realtors in hot markets up this way are cutting their commissions because frankly in some of these markets the house sells before the realtor has to do much if anything and prices so high even if they cut their commission by 50% they are making a small fortune.

Take Vancouver average price is nearly 1 million now, realtors still make a nice chunk of change.

Is that 3% then? ..... Because customarily that is then split 50:50 again with the "broker" (the office/ franchise owner). In short, "your realtor" (whether buyer's or seller's agent) usually only collects 1.5%.

The realtor we used to buy our current house had a real easy job because it was a newbuild, we had already picked it out, and things were selling so easily that there was no negotiation - it was put down your check then sort the paperwork. They got about 12k out of that transaction. It was a husband and wife team, and we got on OK with them. We had used them for sourcing a couple of rentals etc, so when she did a sponsored bike ride, I chipped in a couple of hundred bucks for a good cause. Every year we got a Christmas card, so a couple of years later, when I was doing a sponsored ride, I emailed her, hoping for a donation. Nothing. Zip. Nada. Since then I've done about 8 or 9 property deals, and they have not been involved. But I still get a really fancy Christmas card from them every year.......Probably a bit petulant on my part, but there are so many realtors around, that I didn't feel the need to cultivate a relationship with one that wasn't prepared to reciprocate. With a tax deductible charity donation ffs........

Anyway, to the original question - no, no tip/gift from me for a realtor doing their job. Some of them give me a bottle of wine/bubbly when we close, but not all, and as long as they have done a decent job, its not something I would expect. All of them, however, waive their realtors fee on a rental if we buy through them then rent immediately.

6% is the normal fee around where I lived. The selling agent keeps 3% and hands 3% over to the buyer's agent.

Yes ..... then the sellers agent gives 1.5% to their broker (office/ franchise owner), and the buyers agent gives 1.5% to their broker. In other words the buyer's and seller's agents, the people who smile, meet people, and show the property, only collect 1.5% each. ..... I think that there are more responsibilities and is more training required to be a RE "broker".

Brokers have more training, more responsibilities, more rights, and are held to a higher standard of knowledge.

They also responsible for what their agents do.

Well whatever it is they do, I think we can all agree, none of them deserve tips
