Tip/ gift for realtor?

Hi all,

Just as the title says, we are about to close on a house this week and I was just wondering what the done thing is as regards realtors- is it expected to give them a tip/ gift on top of the commission they already make from the sale?

We gave a bunch of flowers. It's not like they're minimum wage...

We've always shaken hands and said thank you!

Depends on how friendly you are with the realtor. Ours was a family friend. If it's just business then the commission is probably sufficient.

Oddly enough when we closed we actually got a gift from our mortgage broker! He was a nice chap though.

No.

When we bought our condo in Canada the realtor bought me a bottle of Grand Marnier.

Ours gave us a bottle of champagne, glasses, and a ring binder with photos and paperwork. Nice touch, she didn't really need to.

Absolutely not. It is expected that your realtor gives you something though; after all, you've just earned them a fat commission cheque!

Good luck!

Agreed. Even a moderately priced home will yield a few grand in commission. No need for a tip in this case.

We have never given any realtors any kind of tip, both in the UK and USA. We have been given gifts from realtors, though. Last one was a gift basket with two decent bottles of wine and some other goodies in it. If you feel you need to give them anything, then just a thank you card and maybe a bunch of flowers would do it.

It's usually the realtor gives YOU a gift - for giving them the business and sometimes making a nice big commission for doing relatively little.

I think my realtor earned about $8k for three short days of showing us around plus maybe another half day of paperwork. I wouldn't be surprised if others involved her time a lot more though, and maybe a few a lot less.

Mind you it's not as if they sell a house even every week, plus she has to pay Century 21 and her office bills, fuel, income tax... (I'm not actually sticking up for them, just trying to think rationally)
