The solution to fear is defense, and the best defense is a gun. So it is in the best interests on the gun manufacturers to foster fear. So they do. The gun lobby is massively powerful and even control groups that are supposedly grassroots like the NRA while pretending to work in the best interests of the common man. You never see them pushing for ways to prevent the wrong people getting guns though, only for ways that ensure both sides are armed with their product.

I'm not sure why this thread was started if certain posters only wanted to ponce about like big girls blouses around the issue.

OK back to topic, I will need to get myself a rifle for hunting season, thinking bolt action probably .308 quite a few people I know go for 30 06 but not sure I see the benefit. Any thoughts?

The new Ruger Precision Rifle looks tasty.

If you can get a mountain lion with a bow and arrow (much less see one) you are pretty damn good.
I knew some people in Southern California who hunted wild boar with bow and arrow, all kept a side arm just in case.

There's not much to choose between them, except more rifles, and ammo, to choose from in the .308.

From what I had read the 308 has slightly less recoil, most of the people I know seem to have the 30-06. Looking at the specs I had thought a 6.5 would do me, Swede probably but the ammo seems much less common.

Just remember getting bad bruises from .303 but that was many years ago at school.

All the guys I know that have hunted mountain lion use dogs to tree them. I think without dogs you would live a lifetime before getting a mountain lion.

Never seen one, I know they are around when the rabbit population declines.

And my dog has never seen one either.

Here when the little dogs start disappearing you know the mountain lion is wandering thru.

My puppy is probably not at risk, mainly because he can run faster than I can.

Lots of cats get taken by coyotes where I live. So they just get another cat. They often get reported to the cops as being groups of rowdy teenagers.

Never seen a mountain lion in the wild though, but they have been spotted near my house a handful of times in the last few years.
