Things I don't get:

Some of the old (and new) SNL sketches my husband thinks are hilarious, I only find mildly amusing. I don't get them...

It is funny because due to the the rabbit's stupidity in being honest, he learnt a hard lesson in making sure you lie by default.
Again he should have clarified the bear's reason for asking the question before assuming it was safe to tell the truth. The bear however must be commended for solicitiously checking that the rabbit would not be unduly affected by the purpose to which he was completing such usuage.

Perhaps the rabbit had low self-esteem as a result of its parents being emotionally distant and needed the bear to validate its feelings of self worth even though deep down the rabbit knew he would be degraded and thrown aside.

Not sure if this thread will have legs, but figured it could be something a little different. Here's what I don't get:
The bear and the rabbit joke. You know, it's quite well-known. A bear and a rabbit are in the woods, doing their business. The bear turns to the rabbit, and says, "Say, does s*** stick to your fur?"
The rabbit says, "No". And so the bear wipes his *** with rabbit.
Now, I have always dutifully laughed at this, but I'm faking it. I don't really know what I'm meant to be laughing at. Or why this is funny.
Is the bear using his size to completely humiliate the rabbit inherently funny?
If the rabbit's fur doesn't "stick", wouldn't the bear just be smearing things around? Like that awful cheap waxed toiler paper we had in school?
I'm being genuine here; please could someone explain this joke because I don't get it.

Maybe the joke is that it isn't funny and people know it is isn't funny, but they want to see who's going to pretend they understand it and laugh anyway... i.e., the jokes on you.

Well, if bears commonly use rabbits as bog roll then the rabbit was stupid for even being in the vicinity of a defecating bear.
Perhaps the rabbit had low self-esteem as a result of its parents being emotionally distant and needed the bear to validate its feelings of self worth even though deep down the rabbit knew he would be degraded and thrown aside.

I think Eddie Murphy did it on one of his live videos.
I seem to remember finding it hilarious when i was a kid. But not as funny as the ice-cream man bit.

Regardless of how the rabbit answered the bear was going to smear him with poo - thus conveying the utter hopelessness of his situation.

But ultimately, the rabbit doesn't clean the bear. They just both end up, um, tainted.

Exactly. That's the part I never got about that joke. If the bear needs to wipe his ass, it should at least be with something that shit sticks to. Non stick rabbit is just getting shoved up a bear's ass for no reason.
