Is there such a thing as a household tip?

We've cut down a huge wooden pergola thing in the garden covered in a 6 foot bush. At the rate we are filling the trash cans it will take us around 6 months to get rid of it all.

In the UK I would have done a few car runs to the tip, what do we do with it here?

Same thing. Some places will give you a discount if you show your utility bill.

Have they got a different name?

I'm being lame and can only think to search for household tip and get lots of hints on how much to give my hairdresser:rolleyes:

Nice idea, but the pile is around 20 foot wide and 10 foot high. We can't bag it either as the branches are too big.

Hmmm ... I'd try searching for the county dump.

City or county dump, or transfer station

Some townships around here have waste disposal centres but we don't. We leave everything at the bottom of the drive and it's collected with the regular trash.

Not sure about something that size. I'd call the town hall or whatever it's called and find out the best way to dispose of it.

Here the sign says Landfill it belongs to the county and Dh takes car loads of stuff at a time, no charge to residents but you have to show your drivers license to stop all those central valley folk coming up and filling it up seeing they charge down there.

It's called a transfer station here.

They usually charge you. Or a friend of mine lives in a different town and she gets to go free once a year or something like that. It's weird, and probably depends on what taxes you pay for what and what your particular town does.

Although there is one place not far from us that will take natural stuff like lawn and bush clippings for free.

When I was trying to find out I did loads of searches for dumps and got some very unsavoury results

Landfill, or transfer station, or dump. Waste refuse, waste removal as well.

note: some cities/counties will have 'leaf collection' days or 'yard waste' days where they will bring by a 'chipper' and run branches and trees through it into wood chips. You might check with your county environmental or parks department for more info.

And...in some counties you can just burn it, provided "open burns" are allowed (varies depending on weather)

That's an excellent suggestion - they'll know exactly what Nicky should do.

Might be worth checking out the website for your city and having a look around for refuse collect or trash collection or something like that. Our city allows a 'bulky waste' collection once a month where you can put out all sorts of stuff.... we are also allowed 2 visits a month for free to the tip - also called 'transfer stations' here.

Never having been to the tip at all, we'll be there the two free times this month after sorting stuff out for our move...
