Thanksgiving Precautions

Re: Thanksgiving Precautions
I'll be sujected so some turkey broccoli soup cover concoction at the SIL house. But other than that the turkey is roasted and she does nice garlic mashed potatoes with a ton of butter in and brussels sprouts for me and her Dh. No nasty candied yams or sweet potatoes in sight.
I'm the pie lady this year so it'll be Berry pie, Pumpkin pie, and banana cream pie.

Re: Thanksgiving Precautions
I always cook a turkey but the wife and mother-in-law cook a duck. We also have a cranberry sauce that's made from a family recipe that dates back to when my mother's first ancestors arrived in the US (about 1840). Tastes like crap but we eat it each year as sort of a tradition.

Re: Thanksgiving Precautions
Have not fear, my Thanksgiving table will not be seen with any of the following:
marshmallows (full size or mini), a casserole of any kind, no canned green beans, no fried onions, nothing that is artificially colored red or green.

Please don't keep it a secret...share it by putting it in the Recipe Thread in the Lounge. Here's the thread so there's no excuse.

Re: Thanksgiving Precautions
If you have a turkey fryer, never, ever put a frozen turkey into boiling oil.
Especially so if your fryer is, for some inexplicable reason, on a wooden deck.
This Public Service Announcement brought to you by Concerned Citizens of America. Also, don't serve cranberries with mashed potato. It's gross. And salads shouldn't contain nuts, jello or marshmallows. Thank you.

I'm not sure what we're going to do for Thanksgiving, as it also my wife's birthday, which takes precedence. We'll probably roast something, but I doubt it will be turkey. I'm sure we'll be making some pecan pies and some pumpkin cheesecake though.

Re: Thanksgiving Precautions
We are having a very quiet Thankgiving. Hubby will be on a business trip to Europe (lucky Bu**er). So DS and I will just eat what the heck we like and it's not turkey.

Re: Thanksgiving Precautions
I visited hubby 2 Thanksgivings ago in the UK for his first TDay meal. We had boneless turkey breast, succotash, cranberry "chutney," mashed potatoes, gravy, deviled eggs and Paxo sage stuffing.

Re: Thanksgiving Precautions
Funny story about the succotash....DH asked the same thing and I explained that it was corn and lima beans mixed. Then he said what are lima beans? We hunted and hunted in the grocery and then I spotted them...they are called broad beans in England and you can't get the tender 'baby' ones. But I made do and we had the succotash with tough broad beans and not so sweet yellow corn (probably tasted more like what the Pilgrims would have had anyway).
