Default Tea.. its not a difficult concept.. surely.!!

I was out and about and fancied a Cuppa - now I have come to an agreement with myself that although in certain coffee houses I can get a cup of tea - its not going to be the same as back home - thats fine, I can cope with that..

Starbucks do 'Awake' tea - I can cope with that.. Anyway Imagine my joy when I walked into a small local coffee shop and see that on the counter they have English Breakfast tea!! However, the first question the girl asks me is if i would like it hot or cold..! Deep breath.. Hot, I say.

Then the girl hands me my cup of tea and I ask if she could take some of the water out so I can add milk... just then i notice something bobbing up and down in the cup... I said "is that hot water" she says.. "yes.. but I put a few ice cubes in it because the water is very hot" WHAT?????!!!!

Well I'm a yank - and I find that bizarre.

I might drink iced tea in summer on occasion - but if I'm having hot tea, I want it HOT.

Frankly, I would have said "If I wanted iced tea, I would have ordered iced tea. Please make me another - WITHOUT ice. Thank you very much".

To most people here English style tea is a new concept, hardly surprising really since this isn't England.

I couldn't get an English cup of tea in Italy either, how weird.

I must admit, I cannot manage milk in tea. I had a sip of Keith's and... no.

I don't put it in coffee either though - although coffee with cream or cream and sugar I can stand, just not my preference.

I love English and Scottish tea plain though.

So WTF do they bother offering 'English Breakfast Tea'...

Having said that, it would never occur to me to ask for tea here......... I just know it would end in tears

I am actually getting used to iced tea now......... must be going native...

In fairness the girl was probably very young, on mimimum wage and not English. Americans don't know how to make English style tea as this is the US and they don't drink tea like they do in the UK. Personally, we make our tea at home as we are in the USA not the UK
I like you a lot SP but if that's your biggest concern/mishap of the day I'd say you've got it pretty good here in the US.

I guess it could have been used as a teaching opportunity...
