A Taste of America

Re: A Taste of America
There is still one restaurant open, in Santa Clarita, California, just north of LA:

I was gutted when the original went out of business. I had a look at the menu and remember a lot of it -- only the prices are a lot higher now!

There are certain 'utter junk foods' that somehow taste quite good if you just eat them for what they are, and not what they claim to be. Arby's Roast Beef Sandwhich is an insult to "roast beef" (and an insult to "sandwich", for that matter!) but as a unique flavor (when doused with that 'sauce', which is an insult to "BBQ sauce"!), it's actually not bad. Same goes for a McDonalds burger. It doesn't taste ANYTHING like a real burger ... but there's something about that combo of ketchup, pickle, mushy bun, and hideous processed meat that actually goes down the hatch a treat (about once every two years!).

The only way you can eat an Arby's is with a liberal coating of that sauce!

Tonight, we had Pho, garlic noodles, spicy beef salad and grilled prawns at "Pho 84" (Vietnamese) in Oakland; last night, Korean Bulgogi at "Korea House" in Japantown, SF.
Tomorrow, we'll probably have Dim Sum for lunch at "Tin's Tea House" here in town - authentic Dim Sum ... yum yum!

Maybe in North Carolina it's like that; not here in the Bay Area where we have the biggest Japanese community in the US. ("In the 2000 census, the largest Japanese American communities were in California with 394,896, Hawaiʻi with 296,674, Washington with 56,210, New York with 45,237, and Illinois with 27,702." - from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_American).

True enough. We had some lamb steaks tonight...tender as can be. A bit of salt on 'em, that's it. Any time I had lamb in the States there was a slightly off taste, but I find here in New Zealand the lamb is really tasty.
