the sites that caught me out last year were sites where i went to re-download itunes. i searched itunes on google and picked the top site and 'assumed' it was legit. It DID give me itunes but also 'bundled' some pups under the 'recomended download' settings'. I was so annoyed with myself - and then did it again the following week after looking to update adobe or something.
Now i am super super careful to check the download site is the 'official' one and not some copycat - and ALWAYS check the 'custom installation' option and deselect all the crap they want to bundle with it.

It will bundle all the installs for you and strip out all the added crap.
I use the solo version at home and also the networked version at work.

And you have to be really careful as they have a habit of buying domain names very similar to the correct ones. The real ones try to mitigate this to a certain extent by buying similar but can't think of everything. For example, not real but to demonstrate: i-tunes.com, micro5oft.com, andriod.com, etc.

Anytime you download free software, you are exposing yourself to the probability of some sort of PUP (Potentially Unwanted Programs) which can include Trojans, spyware and adware, or other malware which may compromise your privacy.
When software is free to a user, the provider of the software can't make money unless the software contains something that is being sold to someone else.

Yes, I'd say the issue applies to macs as well as it has to do with network access, not with operating system.
