That's funny cause I would not want to live anywhere on the west coast

None of those states would be a choice for me and if I absolutely had to choose or lose my job altogether, I guess it would be Alaska.

Threads like these are pretty futile, most on this forum were parachuted into one particular spot for work or their partner's work and have never lived anywhere else in the US. I've been here 10 years and have lived in New York and Florida and now Illinois. Having been to California several times, I'd run like a thoroughbred the other way if that was on offer, just so overrated. Expensive, huge wealth inequality, a lot of snobs, not much of a 24 hour culture compared to the east coast. I'd go Texas out of any of them, amazing weather, good standard of living and low taxes with any half decent job. Great food there as well, proper portions, not like those shitty European style portions you get in California. Good luck

Dunno where you ate in California but I have not ever had issues with portions there, especially in Mexican food where portions tend to be huge.

I spent 20 years in California and have lived in AZ, WI as well and have been to and spent time in almost every state, and the western states are hands down the best in my view. California is certainly much nicer place compared to Texas.

same here, American portions are huge as it is i'm not sure why you would want more.

like when you buy a sandwich for example that would be so stacked with fillings, you can't even pick it up without everything falling out and then they throw in a load of chips/fries too!

personally I like California, I love the heat and living by the ocean. But saying that I've only been to a few states so far.

I'd say New Mexico, because it's got decent weather and low taxes. But it depends on where in New Mexico.

But the taxes aren't low in Texas, that's the thing. They get you on property tax. You look at these gigantic houses that don't cost much and think, ooh, I can afford to live there. Until you look at the property tax bill.

That's why I said New Mexico, it does have a State income tax but for the average person you're paying less tax overall than Texas.

It depends on how you look at it, I doubt your career prospects are going to be as good as they would be in California, but there's no bloody way I'd ever live in California. Well, not the obviously crowded crappy bits anyway.

New Mexico may be an option in a year or two, they are taking over another company.

Basically I am allowed to work from any office that has reasonable network connectivity. One of the few perks I do get

Oh gawd yes. I have a buddy who lives in Dallas. Horrible place made even worse by the influx of rude New Yorkers. No scenery to speak of and flat as a pancake.

When he visits us he likes to sit out on the patio and just stare at our mountains. He wants to relocate here but cant afford to buy a home at local prices nor afford to rent in a decent area. That's the one drawback about California. It's so hellishly expensive

He could rent in Palmdale and see the mountains from the other side.

Made me laugh when I heard New Mexico has decent weather, well maybe for a rattlesnake. At the end of the day you have to be happy, but Oregon would be a good choice if you want a diverse landscape. Portland seems to have it all, but the only thing missing would be the ocean.

For northern NM (because I wouldn't want to live in southern NM, or east of the Sangres), typically 70s to low 90s in the summer, 10s to 40s in the winter. About 5 to 20% humidity outside the monsoon, a little snow in the winter (usually melts off during the day), a bit of rain in the late summer. For Albuquerque, add about 10 degrees because they're 2,000 feet lower than the rest of us.

And yes, we have diamondbacks to about 7,500 feet, and prairie rattlers to about 10,000 feet. They are indeed quite happy when left alone.
