You will find homophobics worldwide; not only in the US. Many religions, christian and non-christian, think being a homosexual is a crime against god and nature. As for the death penalty, the only ones I know of who believe that is what a homosexual deserves for their crime are in the middle east.

I live in a tiny little Tin Pot town in Mississippi, not too far from where Edgar Ray Killen lived.
I see no more bigotry or racism here than I did in Newcastle back in England when I lived there.
They may not be as fancy and highfalutin as them there city folk, but they are a hell of a lot friendlier and welcoming.
True, they are strongly religious, but that also develops a strong sense of community in the area, and at least in my area the local churches do a heck of a lot to help out charities and the local schools, the majority white and the majority black ones.
